We would love to hear from you. ABOUT GLOWSTICKS
A glow stick is a liquid light source that is encased in a plastic tube
anywhere from 1 to 15 inches long. The tube itself is waterproof and emits no
heat, while the
combination of chemicals inside is non-toxic and non-corrosive. Glow sticks are long-lasting, lightweight and are an
inexpensive source of light and fun!
How do they work?
Light can be produced in a variety of ways - from heat, chemical reactions or
laser emissions. In the case of glow sticks, a reaction between two non-toxic
chemicals inside the plastic tube creates light in a similar way to fluorescent
light bulbs. The light caused by this reaction is called luminescence, which
means a source of light that is not caused by heat.
Glow sticks contain two chemicals that when mixed will create this type of light
effect. When you ‘snap’ a glow stick, you are actually breaking a small,
glass vial
that contains a hydrogen peroxide solution, allowing the solution to mix with
another solution of phenyl oxalate
ester and fluorescent dye. The phenyl oxalate ester reacts with the
hydrogen peroxide solution to create the glow, and the fluorescent dye provides
the color of the glow
stick.
All of our glow sticks depend on a chemical process known as Chemicaluminescence to produce their light. Chemiluminescence is a chemical
reaction that causes a release of energy. Electrons in the chemicals become
excited and rise to a higher energy level. When the electrons drop back to
normal levels, they produce energy in the form of light.
Temperature affects the intensity and duration of the glow. The warmer it is the
brighter the glow and the less the duration of the glow. Cold temperatures
will make the glow less bright, but will extend the duration of the glow.
You may have heard that you can preserve or even re-charge your glow stick by
putting it in the freezer. You cannot re-charge it, as the process cannot be
reversed, but cooling a glow stick will slow down the reaction taking place
inside. Placing a glow stick in the freezer will greatly slow the
reaction, which will preserve the glow for up to 7 days. Once the glow
stick is warmed, the glow will resume. |
